A while back, at the entrance of a gym, there was a picture of a very thin and beautiful woman. The caption was "This summer, do you want to be a mermaid or a whale?"

The story goes, a woman (of clothing size unknown) answered the following way:

"Dear people, whales are always surrounded by friends (dolphins, seals, curious humans), they are sexually active and raise their children with great tenderness.
They entertain like crazy with dolphins and eat lots of prawns. They swim all day and travel to fantastic places like Patagonia, the Barents Sea or the coral reefs of Polynesia.
They sing incredibly well and sometimes even are on cds. They are impressive and dearly loved animals, which everyone defend and admires.

Mermaids do not exist.

But if they existed, they would line up to see a psychologist because of a problem of split personality: woman or fish?
They would have no sex life and could not bear children.
Yes, they would be lovely, but lonely and sad.
And, who wants a girl that smells like fish by his side?

Without a doubt, I'd rather be a whale.

At a time when the media tells us that only thin is beautiful, I prefer to eat ice cream with my kids, to have dinner with my husband, to eat and drink and have fun with my friends.

We women, we gain weight because we accumulate so much wisdom and knowledge that there isn't enough space in our heads, and it spreads all over our bodies.
We are not fat, we are greatly cultivated.
Every time I see my curves in the mirror, I tell myself: "How amazing am I ?! "

Is Media Obsession With Christina Hendricks' Curves Overkill?

Granted. Christina Hendricks has a great body. But does that mean every story about the “Mad Men” star has to center on her “curves” and dress size?

While it’s a step in the right direction to spotlight a Hollywood figure that isn’t unrealistically thin, is the media’s constant reference to her weight and waist still placing too much emphasis on physical appearance?

For example, Hendricks talks to the August issue of Lucky about how no bathing suit works with her ample breast size and how she goes about dressing her “famous curves.” Last year it was widely reported that she was having trouble finding a designer to loan a dress to fit her size 14 body for the Emmys. Another article referred to her as “plus size success story.” One outlet published her supposed measurements and had guessing games over her bra size.

Then Hendricks -- and her husband -- were asked multiple times for a response after a New York Times fashion critic commented that “big girls shouldn’t wear big dresses” with regards to her choice of dress for the 2010 Golden Globes.

Plus it is next to impossible to view a picture of the 36-year-old star without the photo caption or accompanying headline acknowledging her physical attributes in some way. In recent times, we’ve seen everything from “Christina Hendricks struggles to contain her curves,” to “Christina Hendricks Rocks Serious Cleavage” to “she’s refreshingly voluptuous.”

And the top Christina Hendricks Google search terms? Measurements. Weight. Size.

Here's the reality check – Hendricks is a normal size. Yes, the average American woman is a size 14. So why is the entertainment and news arena so hung-up on continually debating, discussing and hailing her so-called “full figured” physique?

“Hollywood and the celebrity-orientated media are generally obsessed with appearance. Although it is nice to see that most of the media is positively commenting on curves, it is still an obsession with appearance, which can be detrimental,” Sarah Maria, body-image expert and author of “Love Your Body, Love Your Life” told FOX411’s Pop Tarts. “The obsession with body-size, no matter the type or size, creates an unhealthy fixation with appearance.”

Other experts agree that the unrelenting barrage of stories surrounding Hendricks’ body is telling.

“Christina is indeed an icon of natural physical beauty and she looks stunning, but the media constantly refer to her fabulous figure as it were an affliction over which she somehow triumphed against great odds,” said pop culture expert Suzannah Galland. “This is so irritating! Would Sophia Loren at the peak of her career in the 1950s have been written about as “plus-sized?” Have times changed so much that we need to justify our awe before a beauty so obvious?”

Jessica Wakeman, blogger for women's website TheFrisky.com, said that the more diverse the bodies that we appreciate and acknowledge in pop culture, the better – but it’s the continual reference to her sex symbol status that poses problems.

“Anything to expand the definition of ‘beautiful’ or even ‘acceptable’ is a good thing. But it’s problematic that we focus on Christina Hendricks’ body in the context of her being a wanton sex goddess on ‘Mad Men,’ she said. “There are plenty of big-bodied women in pop culture who are shamed for being fat. You need not look farther than Kirstie Alley, for example.”

The hype may be getting a little too much for the star herself. Hendricks said she doesn’t feel different than any other woman, and that many of the people she meets are surprised that she isn’t bigger. “It's funny, because I don't feel like I look that different from anybody,” she told Esquire magazine last year. “Everyone's always like, "You're so much smaller in person!’”

The actress also remarked to New York Magazine that “anytime someone talks about your figure constantly, you get nervous, you get really self-conscious. I was working my butt off on the show, and then all anyone was talking about was my body,” adding she’ll answer the body question when asked, but mostly it bores her.

So to set the record straight, let’s not forget that there is actually more to Ms. Hendricks than her body and outward beauty (gasp.) She’s been a working actress since the 90s, which in itself is no mean feat, has been nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, and won a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

While she is gracious enough to answer figure-related questions when asked, is it about time we gave her something else to talk about besides her boobs and backside?

In a fashion industry that is obsessed with size, full-figured Brazilian model Fluvia Lacerda is showing the world that not only is bigger truly better, it's also marketable.

2011 has been proven to be an amazing year for Lacerda, and the plus size fashion industry as a whole. As mainstream fashion insiders argued the legitimacy of plus-sized fashion, Fluvia and her size 18 curves continue to break down the barriers of a thin-obsessed culture.

Right now the Internet is buzzing about Fluvia's fashion spread with Vogue Curvy. I must say, it is one of the hottest fashion editorials that I have ever seen. She looks amazing, and it makes me proud to be a full-figured woman!

Earlier this year Larceda, a native of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and resident of America's fashion capital, New York City became the first (and only) plus sized model to grace the pages of Playboy Brasil.

In June, Full Figured Fashion Week celebrated those who have contributed to the plus size fashion industry and honored Fluvia as Commerical Print Model of the Year.

"The fact that I won this award is a major deal and I'm very passionate about my work, mostly because I feel that I represent the body image of many women," says Lacerda. "I'm not only a healthy woman, but one who wears a size 18 and am confident about it."

Since being featured on the cover of the 2007 Curves calendar, Fluvia has worked for an overabundance of well-known brands such as Torrid, Monif C., Igigi, Fashion Bug, Kmart, Bilka, Takko Fashions, and Eliza Parker. She has been featured in magazines such as Glamour, Latina, Bust and Plus Model Magazine.

Full-figured fashion has made significant strides over the past few years, and continues to earn much deserved credit and praise for positive body imagery for women. But I can honestly say that we still have a long way to go. Luckily, we have women like Fluvia who are willing to fight the good fight and let women like me know that we are beautiful, and we deserve the same style choices as our smaller counterparts.

I asked Fluvia how she feels about being an role model for plus size women and she said "I have an enormous passion for what I do. Smoking was proven to be cancer-causing, tanning beds were shown to be on par with arsenic, but what about canned tomatoes, corn-fed beef, conventionally grown potatoes? What would it take to convince you to clean out your pantry and change your eating habits? Scientists, doctors, even farmers were asked what foods they refuse to eat. The responses had nothing to do with things like donuts due to fat content, or white bread because of the concentration of empty carbs. We’re talking seemingly healthy things like tomatoes, beef, popcorn, potatoes, salmon, milk, and apples. For them, it’s all about how they are produced and packaged.
Seven experts in fields pertaining to both food and the environment answered one simple question: “What foods do you avoid?” Their answers, published in an article entitled “7 Foods the Experts Won’t Eat” on Yahoo! Shine, will make you re-think food. When it comes to food and its affect on your health and the health of this planet, this is what they answered:

1. Canned Tomatoes

The Expert: Fredrick vom Saal, PhD, an endocrinologist at the University of Missouri who studies bisphenol-A.
The Reason: Tin cans are lined with a resin that contains the synthetic estrogen bisphenol-A, which has been linked to a slew of health problems including heart disease, diabetes, reproductive problems, and obesity. But that’s not the biggest problem. The acid in tomatoes breaks down that bisphenol-A, leaching it into the food, and not just in insignificant amounts. According to the article, Saal comments that “you can get 50 mcg of BCA per liter out of a tomato can, and that’s a level that is going to impact people, particularly the young.” That’s why he’s not touching the stuff.
The Solution: If you l0ve the taste of “canned” tomatoes but prefer to skip the bisphenol-A, select glass bottles instead.

2. Corn-Fed Beef

The Expert: Joel Salatin, co-owner of Polyface Farms and author of half a dozen books on sustainable farming.
The Reason: Cattle are naturally grass eaters… not grain eaters. In order to fatten the animals (and profit margins), farmers feed them corn and soybeans. And while the farmers are beefing up their earnings, they are minimizing the nutritional benefits. 3.Microwave Popcorn

The Expert: Olga Naidenko, PhD, a senior scientist for the Environmental Working Group.
The Reason: It’s not the popcorn itself, but the chemically-saturated lining of the bag including a compound called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) that, according to a recent study from UCLA, may be linked to infertility. Microwaving vaporizes the chemicals as they move from coating the bag to lining the popcorn. But it’s not like this fact is un-acknowledged. In fact the article points out that DuPont, as well as other manufacturers, have “promised to phase out PFOA by 2015 under a voluntary EPA plan, but millions of bags of popcorn will be sold between now and then.”
The Solution: Pop your own popcorn the way they did it in the olden days–in a pot.

4. Conventionally Grown (Not Organic) Potatoes

The Expert: Jeffrey Moyer, chair of the National Organic Standards Board.
The Reason: Herbicides and pesticides may not be sprayed directly on root vegetables (since they’re underground), but they absorb the chemicals through the soil and water. Because potatoes are considered the nation’s most popular vegetable, producing a healthy crop is essential to keep up with demand. In order to maintain their health, the article exposes the scary fact that “they’re treated with fungicides during the growing season, then sprayed with herbicides to kill off the fibrous vines before harvesting. After they’re dug up, the potatoes are treated yet again to prevent them from sprouting.” But here’s the scary thing, Moyer says that he’s talked to potato growers “who say point-blank they would never eat the potatoes they sell. They have separate plots where they grow potatoes for themselves without all the chemicals.”
The Solution: Another no-brainer— Only buy organic potatoes.

5. Farmed Salmon

The Expert: David Carpenter, MD, director of the Institute for Health and the Environment at the University at Albany and publisher of a major study in the journal Science on contamination in fish.
The Reason: When salmon is crammed into pens, fed soy, poultry litter, and hydrolyzed chicken feathers (obviously an unnatural environment for the up-stream swimmers), they’re levels of healthy vitamin D lowers as the contaminants increases. Those contaminants include carcinogens, PCBs, brominated flame retardants, and pesticides (like DDT). The article points out that DDT has been linked to both diabetes and obesity, quoting Carpenter in saying that “You can only safely eat one of these salmon dinners every 5 months without increasing your risk of cancer… It’s that bad.”
The Solution: Avoid farmed salmon and instead select wild-caught Alaskan salmon. But make sure the packaging reads “wild.” If it just says “fresh Atlantic,” according to the article, “it’s farmed.”

6. Milk Produced with Artificial Hormones

The Expert: Rick North, project director of the Campaign for Safe Food at the Oregon Physicians for Social Responsibility and former CEO of the Oregon division of the American Cancer Society.
The Reason: Unlike in the olden days when fresh milk was some of the purest nutrients you could get, dairy cows today are fed growth hormones like rBGH and rBST to increase milk production. Problem is, while they may be making more milk, they are also increasing their chances of udder infections (which can lead to pus in the milk). More than that, the article points out that high levels of IGF-1 from the rBGH may play a role in the development of breast, prostate, and colon cancers… which is why North says that “it’s banned in most industrialized countries.”
The Solution: Read the labels and be sure that your milk doesn’t contain rBGH or rBST and that it is labeled organic or “produced without artificial hormones.“

7. Conventional Apples

The Expert: Mark Kastel, former executive for agribusiness and co-director of the Cornucopia Institute, a farm-policy research group that supports organic foods
The Reason: Apples are the recipient of the most pesticides of all Fall fruits. Chemical producers swear that the residue is not harmful for human consumption, but the Yahoo! Article goes on to quote Kastel in saying that “Farm workers have higher rates of many cancers.”
The Solution: Buy organic apples where available or at least thoroughly wash and peel apples before eating them.

1. Gaping Button-Front Top

Along with saving money, quitting smoking and behaving in a more saintly fashion, Americans’ favorite New Year’s resolution is, of course, losing weight; a disproportionately large number of us make a resolution to lose weight for the new year.
New research shows you’re 10 times more likely to reach your goal if you make a pact with yourself to change, rather than simply have a desire to do so. People who make resolutions and succeed in reaching their goals have the same number of slip-ups as those who resolve and fail.
One of the reasons many of us fail is that we try to use a short-term approach to solve a long-term problem. We secretly believe we can begin a diet, lose weight and then resume all our old bad habits. We fail to realize that weight management is a lifestyle challenge that can’t be achieved without permanent changes.
There’s no magic cure. Losing weight and keeping it off requires a major commitment of time and energy. As they say, sometimes the truth hurts, and we have to gear up for the contest if we’re going to stay on the winning track.
Second, we may have the best of intentions, do all the right things and then we crash into a faulty diet mentality thinking, “I’m not losing weight fast enough!” We get impatient. Why? Well, what do all the ads say? “Drop 10 pounds in a week!” Having been brainwashed to expect rapid results, we get demoralized when we don’t see the weight drop off quickly. We need to adjust our expectations about successful weight goals. Gradual loss (1 or 2 pounds a week at the most) is more likely to be permanent.
Another reason we fail is that we don’t exercise. We give in to all the excuses such as, “I don’t have the time” or “I get enough exercise during the day.”
Research studies have shown repeatedly that exercise is the key to weight management success. Exercise is, without question, the best thing we can do for ourselves, both physically and mentally. It’s the modern panacea. Yet almost two-thirds of Americans don’t get enough exercise. Without regular exercise, our weight-loss attempts will fail.
So, how can you maximize your chance for success and make this the last year you need to make the resolution to lose weight?
1. Make a commitment: Achieving and maintaining your healthy weight requires a lifelong commitment. It requires concentration, time and effort. Make sure that you’re ready to make the necessary permanent changes and that you do so for the right reasons. No one else can make you lose weight. In fact, external pressure — often from people closest to you — may actually make matters worse.
You must want to make diet and exercise changes to please yourself. As you’re planning to launch new weight-related lifestyle changes, try to resolve any other problems that may be in your life. It takes considerable mental and physical energy to change your habits. So, make sure you aren’t distracted by other major issues in your life, such as marital or financial problems.
Timing is key to success. You need to be at a point in your life where you’re ready to take on the challenges of serious weight loss. Keep in mind that no matter how prepared you may be, you’ll occasionally overeat or eat foods that you should avoid. Rather than let a setback derail your efforts, accept that it happened and get back on track. Don’t expect to be perfect — and never give up.
Motivate yourself by focusing on all of the benefits of losing weight, such as having more energy and improving your health. Then look at the negatives, such as finding the time to exercise, and come up with creative solutions.
2. Draw on support from others: Ultimately, only you can help yourself lose weight, so you have to take responsibility for your own behavior. But that doesn’t mean that you have to do everything alone. Seek support from your spouse, family and friends.
An ideal support person might be someone who also is participating in a weight-loss program, such as another eDiets member. Some people fare better with professional support, such as from a dietitian or personal trainer. eDiets offers support and access to professionals to help you accomplish your goals.
3. Set Realistic Goals: Focus on health instead of weight as your primary measure of success. When you’re thinking about what you expect from your new eating and exercise plan, be realistic. Set weekly or monthly goals and track your progress. Remember that you’re in this for the long haul. Anything you undertake too intensely or too vigorously quickly becomes too onerous, so you’re more likely to give up.
In addition, make your goals “process goals,” such as eating judiciously and exercising regularly, rather than “outcome goals,” such as losing 50 pounds. Changing your process — your habits — is the key to weight loss. Make sure that your process goals are realistic, specific and measurable — you’ll walk for 30 minutes a day, five days a week.
4. Learn to enjoy healthier foods: Liquid meals, diet pills and unusual combinations of foods aren’t the key to long-term weight control and better health. Instead, learn how to eat a variety of healthy foods. Adopting a new eating style that promotes a healthy weight for you must include lowering your total calorie intake. But decreasing calories need not mean decreasing taste, satisfaction or even ease of meal preparation.
5. Change your lifestyle: It’s not enough to eat healthy foods and exercise for only a few weeks or even several months. You have to incorporate these behaviors into your life. To do that, you have to change the behaviors that helped make you overweight in the first place.
Lifestyle changes start with taking an honest look at your eating habits and daily routine. To assess your eating behaviors, ask yourself if you tend to eat when you’re bored, angry, tired, anxious, depressed or socially pressured. Look at your eating style and shopping and cooking techniques. Were you taught to clean your plate? Do you eat too fast? Do you eat while watching TV? See if any patterns emerge to identify possible triggers for overeating.
After assessing your personal challenges to weight loss, try working out a strategy to gradually change habits and attitudes that have sabotaged your past efforts. Simply admitting your own challenges won’t get you past them entirely. But it helps in planning how you’ll deal with them and whether you’re going to succeed in losing weight once and for all.
6. Celebrate your victories: Set small reachable goals and reward yourself when you get there:
