Lane Bryant is more than just a popular store for plus-size women — the company was actually the first to offer clothing designed for the plus-size market. All the way back in the early 1900′s, a woman named Lena Himmelstein Bryant Malsin started selling the first real line of commercial maternity wear in a time when pregnancy was something that wasn’t discussed in public. The name “Lane Bryant” came from a misspelling at the bank. The company expanded to sell clothing for “stout women” prior to WWI, another marketplace innovation.
